HBO's latest 'Game of Thrones' prequel, 'A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,' introduces viewers to Ser Arlan of Pennytree, a hedge knight who mentored the protagonist Ser Duncan the Tall. Played by Danny Webb, Ser Arlan is an elderly knight who travelled with Dunk for years before his death in the premiere episode. After his passing, Dunk takes Arlan's sword and heads to a jousting tournament to prove himself as a knight.
The series, based on George R.R. Martin's novellas, focuses on Dunk (Peter Claffey) and his squire Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Dunk struggles to be taken seriously because no one witnessed his knighting by the obscure Ser Arlan. Despite this, he aspires to greatness, guided by the lessons from his mentor.
Ser Arlan's role is pivotal as the catalyst for Dunk's journey. Without his knighting, Dunk would not have the foundation to pursue knighthood. The show explores Dunk's growth as he navigates a world of Targaryens, Baratheons, and other noble houses, all while carrying the legacy of his humble mentor.
