Rick Moranis Spotted in New York City Ahead of Major Film Comeback
Rick Moranis, the iconic actor best known for his roles in Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Ghostbusters, was seen in a rare public appearance in New York City this week. The 72-year-old star, who has largely stepped away from the spotlight for decades, cut a casual figure as he awaits his highly anticipated return to the big screen in Spaceballs 2.
A Life-Changing Decision
Moranis gradually withdrew from Hollywood after the tragic death of his wife, costume designer Ann Belsky, from breast cancer in 1991. The couple had been married for five years, and her passing at age 34 left Moranis to raise their two children, Rachel and Mitchell, as a single father. Until that point, Moranis had been a prolific figure in the film industry, with three major releases in 1989 alone: Honey I Shrunk the Kids, Ghostbusters II, and Parenthood.
Despite his retreat from the public eye, Moranis did not completely abandon his career. He continued to work on the Honey I Shrunk the Kids franchise, starring in the 1992 sequel Honey I Blew Up the Kid and the 1997 direct-to-video film Honey We Shrunk Ourselves, which remains his last live-action feature to date.
Keeping Busy Behind the Scenes
In the years following his withdrawal from mainstream acting, Moranis remained active in the entertainment world through various creative pursuits:
- He released two comedy country music albums: The Agoraphobic Cowboy in 2005 and My Mother's Brisket and Other Love Songs in 2013.
- He lent his voice to animated projects, including both Brother Bear films and the direct-to-video special Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and the Island of Misfit Toys.
- In 2019, plans were announced for his return to live-action in a new Honey I Shrunk the Kids film titled Shrunk, though the COVID-19 pandemic forced the project into hiatus.
A Difficult Period and a Promising Return
Moranis faced further challenges in late 2020 when he was the victim of a random assault on a New York City sidewalk, an incident that drew widespread public sympathy amid rising crime rates in the area. However, his fortunes appear to be turning with the official announcement last year that he will star in Spaceballs 2, the sequel to Mel Brooks' 1987 sci-fi comedy spoof.
The original Spaceballs featured Moranis as Lord Dark Helmet, a parody of Darth Vader, alongside a cast including John Candy, Bill Pullman, and Joan Rivers. While Candy and Rivers have since passed away, Pullman and Moranis are set to reprise their roles in the sequel, joined by original cast members Daphne Zuniga and George Wyner. New additions to the ensemble include Keke Palmer, Josh Gad, Anthony Carrigan, and Lewis Pullman, Bill Pullman's son.
A Relaxed Appearance in the Big Apple
During his recent sighting in New York City, Moranis looked comfortable and at ease, dressed in a true blue sweater paired with stylish pale grey slacks. He accessorized with a baseball cap to shield himself from the sun, tortoiseshell spectacles, and carried a jacket in one hand. This low-key outing hints at a more relaxed chapter for the actor as he prepares to step back into the limelight after years of reclusion.
Fans of Moranis' work in classics like Honey I Shrunk the Kids and Ghostbusters are eagerly awaiting his return to live-action filmmaking, marking a significant moment in his storied career.
