'Remarkable' detective drama returns for series 2

A detective drama praised as 'remarkable' and compared to Happy Valley and Broadchurch has returned to screens. The second season of A Remarkable Place to Die begins on freeview channel U&Drama at 9pm on Thursday, November 5. For those busy in the evening, it can be streamed at your own pace on U at no extra cost, and the first series is available on the same platform or via Channel 4.

What Happens in the New Series

The series follows Detective Anais Mallory, played by Chelsie Preston Crayford, as she returns to her home town of Queenstown in New Zealand. The plot picks up after the events of the first series, with Mallory still haunted by one unanswered question from her last case. After the discovery of Maja Staunton's body on display, Anais is convinced it is connected to a previous murder and secretly launches her own investigation.

Her search quickly attracts unwanted attention. Someone knows Anais is digging and is determined to stop her before she gets too close to the truth. As things get more dangerous, the others gradually come on board, following the trail that Maja left behind.

From Queenstown to Europe

Their search takes them from Queenstown to Europe, where they uncover a link to a series of disturbing display murders across the world, with victims staged as grotesque works of art. As the evidence begins to point towards those closest to the victim, Anais faces an impossible race against time to uncover what really happened before anyone else becomes the next piece in the killer's twisted collection.

Alongside this overarching mystery, there are also a series of unique crimes to solve, ranging from a deadly neighbourhood war over rabbits to a missing priceless jewel, each bringing its own colourful suspects and unexpected twists.

Critical and Fan Response

The first series received few reviews at the time it originally aired, but one critic claimed: "Episodes of A Remarkable Place To Die move along because both the episodic mystery and the continuing story are both very satisfying to follow. The stunning New Zealand scenery always helps." Another reviewer declared it was indeed 'remarkable' and called it "Happy Valley meets Broadchurch".

Fans have echoed this praise. One viewer posted online: "This series was an absolute delight from start to finish, offering a captivating storyline that kept me thoroughly engaged throughout. It's clear that every detail was crafted with care, as evidenced by the breathtaking scenery that elevated key moments within the narrative." Another agreed: "It's very compelling and visually stunning for location as well. I can't wait for more episodes!" While someone else admitted: "Surprising plots. I stayed up all night to find out the end of the story."
