Reese Witherspoon has delivered an exciting and definitive update on the long-awaited third installment of the Legally Blonde franchise. In a recent interview with Bustle, the actress, who recently celebrated her 50th birthday, confirmed that the project is actively moving forward.
Elle Woods Set to Make a Triumphant Return
When directly questioned about the status of Legally Blonde 3, Witherspoon responded with a candid and emphatic "Absolutely." She elaborated that scriptwriters and filmmakers are currently refining the "world" of the film, as the screenplay remains in active development. "It's a whole world that we want to build with this character," Witherspoon explained, highlighting the ongoing creative process.
A Character for a New Generation
Witherspoon acknowledged the significant demographic eagerly anticipating Elle Woods' return, particularly at a later and equally pivotal stage in her life. She drew parallels to the cultural phenomenon of the Barbie movie, noting a similar desire among women to rally around multifaceted characters that reflect real-life experiences.
"There's a feeling that women want to rally around those characters that were part of their childhood and celebrate the idea that Elle Woods is more than the color pink," Witherspoon stated. "She's part of your identity of self-worth and accomplishment."
Prequel Series Announced Alongside Film News
This confirmation comes shortly after the announcement of a release date for the Legally Blonde prequel television series, titled Elle. The show, which will explore Elle Woods' high school years, is set to premiere on Amazon Prime Video on July 1. It stars newcomer Lexi Minetree and is created by Laura Kittrel, produced by Witherspoon's own Hello Sunshine production company. Remarkably, a second season has already been greenlit ahead of the series' debut.
Reflecting on a Lasting Legacy
During the same interview, Witherspoon reflected on the enduring impact of the original 2001 film, which has become a cult classic with resonance across multiple generations of women. "I had no idea," she admitted. "We worked really hard on the messaging."
She emphasized the intentional focus of the first film's narrative: "I was determined to make sure it was a story about a woman that wasn't about her romantic relationships. It was about how she worked hard to accomplish something very difficult on her own terms, and no relationship would define her early 20s like that."
Behind the Scenes of Legally Blonde 3
The third movie is being co-written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor, co-creator of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. The last significant update prior to Witherspoon's comments was over a year ago, when Kaling revealed they had submitted a completed script draft in late 2024.
"Dan Goor and I just finished up a draft of Legally Blonde 3, which I can't talk about, but we turned it in before Christmas," Kaling told Variety in February 2025. The project has been in development for years, with Kaling previously hinting at the premise in January 2021, telling Access Hollywood, "We wrote Elle Woods at 40, so how Elle is at 40 versus how she was at 21 has been really fun to imagine."
Returning Faces and Past Enthusiasm
In the forthcoming third movie, Jennifer Coolidge is expected to reprise her role as Paulette, with Witherspoon confirmed to return as the beloved Elle Woods. Witherspoon's enthusiasm for the project is long-standing; back in 2019, during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, she expressed eagerness to revisit the iconic character.
"I loved playing that character and she's so amazing," Witherspoon said at the time. "And I mean, if you guys want it, I guess I'll do it!" This latest update solidifies that commitment, promising fans a new chapter for Elle Woods that celebrates growth, identity, and accomplishment.
