BBC Two's new competition show Race Against the Tide has been dubbed 'silly' as viewers share their verdicts just one episode in. The fresh series, hosted by Love Island narrator Iain Stirling, sees seven teams face off in a unique challenge.
Sand Sculpture Challenge
Set on St Andrews Beach, teams of two have just six hours to build sand sculptures before the tide sweeps in. Each duo consists of one sculpting professional and a complete novice. Competitors come from diverse backgrounds, including a leather craftsman, cake decorator, plasterer, stationery designer, carpenter, art teacher and fine art student.
Judging the sculptures are professionals Sadie Clayton and Jamie Wardley, who evaluate each entry based on technical skill, creativity and storytelling.
Fan Reactions
The first episode aired on Tuesday (August 18) night, and fans were largely impressed. One fan wrote on X: "Watching #RaceAgainstTheTide on #iPlayer. It's actually quite fun." Another added: "#raceagainstthetide - fantastic fun and silly summer television and completely pointless. Great stuff."
A third viewer commented: "Loving #RaceAgainstTheTide with @IainDoesJokes on @BBC @BBCTwo a great fun new show. Who doesn't love making sand castles on the beach. This is that x1000!! Original idea! Well done." However, not everyone was won over, with one critic posting: "I think this is better viewed on mute #raceagainstthetide."
Episode Outcome
Each episode focuses on a new challenge with a different theme. The season premiere asked contestants to make a sculpture based on the phrase 'Life's A Beach'. At the end of the task, Rachel and Athena earned the title of Sand Champions, while Zara and David were forced to leave the beach. Over the following five episodes, a new couple will be eliminated until one team is crowned the first-ever Race Against the Tide champions.
Ahead of the series debut, Iain Stirling said: "Audiences are going to love Race Against the Tide! It's got everything you could want from a summer show – stunning Scottish scenery, incredible creativity, and, of course, lots of sand puns - you can be shore of that. I can't wait for everyone to see what our teams create." Race Against the Tide is available to stream on BBC iPlayer.
