Netflix has confirmed the release date for its upcoming adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel East of Eden, starring Florence Pugh. The seven-part family drama will be available to stream from Thursday, October 1.
Cast and Creative Team
The series follows antihero Cathy Ames (Pugh), whose life becomes intertwined with generations of men from the Trask family. Christopher Abbott plays Adam Trask, and Mike Faist portrays Charles Trask.
The story is reimagined by Zoe Kazan, whose grandfather Elia Kazan directed the 1955 film adaptation starring James Dean. Kazan aimed to make an "epic and intimate" show.
Kazan's Praise for Pugh
Kazan revealed she had no backup choice for the lead role. "I didn't have a backup," she told Tudum. "I didn't have another person that I thought would be just as good. She is the exact right person to play Cathy."
She added: "Her awareness of the camera is unparalleled. I don't use this word lightly: I think she's a genius. I watched her on set for five months. I have no more insight now as to how she works than I did before. I can see how hard she works, and I can see how much it means to her, but there's no obvious preparation or process that is visible to me at least."
Fan Reactions
Some fans have yet to read the source material. One commented on Netflix's Instagram: "Waittttttttttttttt.... Let me read the novel first." Another wrote: "Florence is gonna wreck us as Cathy. I can't waaaaaait." A third said: "FAVOURITE BOOK BEING TURNED INTO AN ADAPTATION WITH FLORENCE & MIKE? trying to remain calm."
East of Eden streams on Netflix from October 1.
