The Peaky Blinders film, The Immortal Man, has arrived on Netflix, introducing new characters and deepening the lore of the Shelby family. Among the most intriguing is Kaulo, a spirit medium played by Rebecca Ferguson, who is revealed as the identical twin sister of Zelda, a woman from Tommy Shelby's past.
Zelda, a Romani traveller, first appeared in flashbacks in the television series. In 1914, she stole a watch from Tommy at Appleby Horse Fair, leading to a night together under a hazel tree that left her pregnant. Her father, enraged, shot Tommy with a squirrel gun, but the gangster survived and went off to fight in the First World War. Tommy never saw Zelda again.
In series six, Tommy learned of his son Duke Shelby's existence through Esme, John Shelby's widow. Zelda had died, and Duke was working as a thief. Tommy took him under his wing. According to the Peaky Blinders Fandom page, Zelda fell ill and was refused a bed at a hospital in Bridgnorth, dying that night. Duke later killed the person who denied her care.
In The Immortal Man, Kaulo infiltrates Tommy's home during his self-imposed exile, urging him to rescue Duke from a Nazi scheme. Ferguson described her character as otherworldly, drawing on Romani culture and beliefs. "With belief comes power," she said, noting that Kaulo can manipulate people through their faith.
Peaky Blinders: The Immortal Man is streaming now on Netflix.
