Paul Dano to Face Guardian Readers' Questions After Tarantino Controversy
Paul Dano Guardian Interview After Tarantino Row

Paul Dano, the acclaimed actor known for his roles in films such as There Will Be Blood and Love & Mercy, is set to participate in a Guardian reader interview. This comes in the wake of a public controversy sparked by director Quentin Tarantino's harsh comments about Dano's acting abilities.

Tarantino's Criticism and Industry Backlash

Last year, on a podcast, Quentin Tarantino launched a scathing attack on Paul Dano, labelling his performance as "weak sauce," particularly in his role opposite Daniel Day-Lewis in There Will Be Blood. Tarantino also targeted actors Owen Wilson and Matthew Lillard in his tirade.

The criticism prompted a significant backlash from the film industry. Numerous high-profile figures, including George Clooney, Toni Collette, Ben Stiller, and Daniel Day-Lewis himself, publicly defended Dano. Multiple articles in The Guardian and other publications praised his work, highlighting his talent and versatility.

A Diverse and Celebrated Career

Paul Dano's career spans over two decades, marked by a series of memorable performances. He first gained attention with an astonishing early role in L.I.E. opposite Brian Cox. His breakthrough came with Little Miss Sunshine, where he played Dwayne, a teenager who takes a vow of silence.

Other standout roles include his portrayal of Brian Wilson in Love & Mercy, a chilling performance in 12 Years a Slave, and an unforgettable turn in Prisoners, notably in a tense scene with Hugh Jackman. His recent interpretation of the Riddler in The Batman was widely praised for its unsettling, low-key approach, distinct from previous portrayals by Jim Carrey and Frank Gorshin.

Beyond acting, Dano made his directorial debut with the 2018 film Wildlife. He also starred in the unconventional Swiss Army Man with Daniel Radcliffe and played Steven Spielberg's father in The Fabelmans.

New Film and Upcoming Interview

Dano's latest project is the political thriller The Wizard of the Kremlin, where he plays a young artist in 1990s Russia who transforms into a powerful government spin doctor. The film also features Jude Law as a young Vladimir Putin, described by some as resembling a Russian James Bond.

In response to the Tarantino episode, Dano expressed gratitude for the support he received, stating, "I was incredibly grateful that the world spoke up for me." Now, he is inviting questions from Guardian readers for an upcoming interview. Readers are encouraged to submit their queries by 6pm GMT on 2 April, with his answers to be published shortly after. The Wizard of the Kremlin is scheduled for release in UK and Irish cinemas from 17 April.
