The Original Hotel Inspector's Journey After Leaving the Hit Show
Channel 5's popular series The Hotel Inspector has returned for a new season, but fans might be wondering about the whereabouts of its original presenter, Ruth Watson. The show, which first aired in 2005, featured hotelier Ruth Watson visiting struggling establishments to offer expert advice and help revitalise their businesses.
Ruth Watson's Rise to Fame and Departure
With decades of experience in the hospitality industry, Ruth Watson quickly became a household name through the programme. Her expertise and on-screen charisma contributed to the show's success, earning it a Royal Television Society Award in November 2006. However, after three series, Ruth decided to step down in 2008.
At the time of her exit, Ruth explained her decision to Digital Spy, stating, "We've done it for three [series] now and I think it's time to move on." She emphasised her commitment to content with integrity, adding, "I'm not interested in doing anything that's a game and is just there for entertainment. What we do has integrity and a real point to it."
Life After The Hotel Inspector
Following her departure, Ruth Watson signed an exclusive deal with Channel 4 in 2008. She fronted several programmes, including Country House Rescue, which aired until March 2011. In 2013, she hosted a 15-part series on Channel 4 titled Ruth Watson Means Business!
Beyond television, Ruth has authored multiple books, such as The Really Helpful Cookbook, Fat Girl Slim, and Something for the Weekend. As of October 2024, she serves as the President of the Guild of Food Writers and is a member of the Society of Authors and the ALCS.
Ruth also maintains an active presence on Instagram, where she shares glimpses of her daily life, including meals and her expansive garden, keeping her followers engaged.
Personal and Professional Ventures
In her personal life, Ruth is married to husband David Watson, with whom she has collaborated on various business ventures. The couple, who married in 1981, spent six years transforming Hintlesham Hall in Hintlesham into a 33-room hotel, starting in 1983.
In 1990, they launched one of Britain's pioneering gastropubs, the Fox and Goose Inn at Fressingfield. Later, in November 1999, Ruth and David purchased the Crown and Castle Hotel in Orford, converting it into a modern country house hotel.
Ruth's contributions to hospitality were recognised in 2010 when she received an Honorary Doctorate from the University of Suffolk for her services to the industry.
The Show's Continuation
After Ruth Watson's exit, Channel 5 replaced her with current host Alex Polizzi, who has continued the show's legacy. The Hotel Inspector airs every Thursday at 9pm on Channel 5, offering viewers ongoing insights into the hotel industry.
