Ocean's Eleven Prequel Loses Second Director as Lee Isaac Chung Exits
Ocean's Eleven Prequel Loses Director Lee Isaac Chung

The highly anticipated Ocean's Eleven prequel starring Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling has encountered another significant setback, with director Lee Isaac Chung becoming the second filmmaker to exit the project over reported creative differences.

Second Director Departure for Warner Bros Prequel

Chung, who directed the acclaimed disaster film Twisters, stepped into the director's chair last year after Jay Roach's departure. However, Warner Bros and Lucky Chap Entertainment, Robbie's production company, have now confirmed Chung's exit in what they describe as an amicable separation.

Studio and Production Company Issue Joint Statement

"This is an amicable split due to creative differences," Warner Bros told Deadline. "Lee Isaac is a singular filmmaking talent whose vision and partnership have been invaluable to Warner Bros and Lucky Chap throughout this journey. Our experience with him has only deepened our enthusiasm to collaborate on future projects together."

The project, first announced by Warner Bros in 2022, is being produced by Lucky Chap Entertainment, which Robbie co-founded with producer Josey McNamara. Representatives for both Chung and Warner Bros have been approached for further comment regarding this latest development.

Plot Details and Casting Speculation

While official plot details remain scarce, industry reports suggest Robbie and Gosling will portray the parents of Danny Ocean, the character famously played by George Clooney in Steven Soderbergh's trilogy. Clooney originated the role in the 2001 remake of the 1960 crime-comedy, subsequently appearing in Ocean's Twelve (2004) and Ocean's Thirteen (2007).

Clooney himself has expressed enthusiasm for the casting choices, telling Variety in 2023: "Margot Robbie's my mother? I've always thought that. And Ryan Gosling is my father, and when you think about it, it makes sense. Truly."

Setting and Screenplay Development

The new prequel is expected to depart from the Las Vegas settings of previous films, with Variety reporting a planned 1960s European backdrop. Carrie Solomon, writer of A Family Affair, is currently developing the screenplay, which will explore events preceding the original Ocean's Eleven heist narrative.

The original 2001 film featured an ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Brad Pitt, and Julia Roberts as sophisticated con artists orchestrating an elaborate casino robbery, establishing a franchise that has remained culturally significant for over two decades.

Parallel Developments in the Ocean's Universe

Separately, Clooney revealed last year that the original Ocean's cast is likely reuniting for Ocean's 14, confirming they have secured budget approval from Warner Bros and possess what he described as a "great script" ready for production.

"We just got the budget approved at Warner Bros. and we're trying to set up," Clooney told E! News. "It's just scheduling, so it's just setting a start date for us. Probably start in about nine or 10 months, shooting."

Recent Franchise Loss

The Ocean's franchise suffered a loss in 2024 with the passing of co-star Scott L Schwartz, who died of congestive heart failure. Schwartz played Bruiser, the gentle giant in Soderbergh's trilogy, and was among the select few actors to appear in all three films alongside the main heist crew.

This latest directorial change adds another layer of complexity to the prequel's development timeline, raising questions about when audiences might finally see Robbie and Gosling's interpretation of the Ocean family origins.
