Christopher Nolan's 'most underrated' film, Tenet, has been added to Netflix as his latest epic The Odyssey wows fans in cinemas worldwide. Nolan, one of the UK's most successful directors, won Best Picture and Best Director at the 96th Academy Awards in 2024 for Oppenheimer.
Nolan's Career and The Odyssey
Famously released on the same day as Barbie in the 'Barbenheimer' event, Oppenheimer starred Cillian Murphy as the creator of the atomic bomb. Nolan was finally recognized at the Oscars after five previous nominations. Beyond Oppenheimer, he is known for The Dark Knight trilogy, Inception, Dunkirk, and Interstellar.
On July 15, 2026, The Odyssey hit cinemas nearly a year after tickets went on sale. Starring Matt Damon, the film follows King Odysseus as he sails for Ithaca, facing deadly monsters and vengeful gods. The cast includes Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and Himesh Patel.
Tenet: A Sci-Fi Gem on Netflix
Released in 2020, Tenet is a science fiction action thriller following a CIA officer recruited into a secret organization tasked with tracing objects traveling backward through time. The film stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, Kenneth Branagh, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.
Tenet was the first Hollywood tent-pole to open in theaters during the pandemic, grossing $366 million worldwide on a $205 million budget. While lower than Nolan's typical earnings, it was the fifth-highest-grossing film of 2020. Critics gave it a 70% score on Rotten Tomatoes, Nolan's worst-reviewed film, with the consensus: 'A visually dazzling puzzle for film lovers to unlock.'
Growing Appreciation
Over the past six years, Tenet has gained a cult following. Reddit users have praised it: @HippieWizard said, 'I LOVED IT! I understand the confusion because most people are oblivious to normal things let alone this very detailed movie.' @fullsendit added, 'This is such a unique raw film and I loved It. Did I understand exactly the time mechanics...? Of course not far from It.' @KlassicLoL wrote, 'Destined to be Nolan’s cult film. Don’t try to understand it, feel it.' @Kep0a commented, 'Excellent film... a fucking car chase in reverse is the coolest thing I have ever seen.'
