Netflix Cancels Military Drama 'Boots' After One Season Amid Authenticity Backlash

Netflix has cancelled the military drama 'Boots' after just one season, sparking outrage among fans who praised the show as one of the best of 2025. The series, which premiered in October, followed closeted gay teenager Cameron Cope, played by Miles Heizer, as he impulsively enlists in the US Marine Corps.

'Boots' was the last series co-produced by Norman Lear, the legendary screenwriter and World War II veteran, before his death in 2023 at age 101. Despite a 90% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a reported 9.4 million views in its first week, the show faced backlash from conservatives, including being labelled 'woke garbage' by the Pentagon.

Fans have taken to social media to express their disappointment. One Reddit user said: 'It was a popular show and it wasn't expensive. There was nothing woke about Boots.' Another commented: 'My day is completely ruined. This cast was amazing.'

The cancellation comes as Netflix is poised to acquire movie studio Warner Bros, a deal requiring government approval. Some viewers have threatened to cancel their subscriptions in protest, with one writing: 'Guess I'm cancelling Netflix. F*** them.'

Despite the backlash, many viewers praised the show's authenticity and emotional depth. An IMDb user called it 'the best show of 2025', adding: 'The show gets a lot of things right about being in the military and the stresses and camaraderie.'
