MTV Axes Jersey Shore: Family Vacation as Network Overhaul Continues
MTV has officially pulled the plug on its popular reality series Jersey Shore: Family Vacation, announcing that the forthcoming season will be its last. The network, which is undergoing a significant transformation, made the announcement on Wednesday via a press release.
The press release stated: "This farewell season marks the culmination of a franchise that entertained millions with major life milestones, laugh-out-loud chaos, and the unfiltered chemistry that defined an era of reality television." It added that the "'Shore' family is going bigger than ever, celebrating the moments that made this franchise a cultural phenomenon."
Final Season Details and Cast Reactions
The final season, premiering on Thursday, May 7 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on MTV, will consist of 18 episodes. According to the network, it will be "packed with fist-pump-worthy milestones and unforgettable moments", including pregnancies, baby showers, bachelorette parties, gender reveals, births, birthdays, and weddings.
However, shortly after the announcement, cast member Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino suggested the series might simply be moving to a different network. He posted on X: "Legends don't retire — they reroute. The network changed. The legacy didn't. Jersey Shore is forever. Just wait until you see what's next."
Background of the Franchise and Recent Cast News
Jersey Shore: Family Vacation debuted in 2018, reuniting most of the original cast from the six-season series Jersey Shore, which aired from 2009 to 2012. The original show followed housemates partying, working, and living together in Seaside Heights, New Jersey.
The revival featured breakout star Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, Mike Sorrentino, Paul DelVecchio, Jenni Farley, Vinny Guadagnino, Deena Nicole Cortese, and Ronnie Ortiz-Magro. Last month, Snooki revealed she had been diagnosed with Stage 1 cervical cancer and would likely undergo a hysterectomy.
She said in a TikTok video: "Obviously not the news that I was hoping for, but also not the worst news, just because they caught it so early, thank freaking God."
Broader Network Changes and Previous Cancellations
The cancellation of Jersey Shore: Family Vacation comes months after MTV shut down its 24/7 music channels worldwide in December, ending a 44-year tradition. This move is part of broader changes at Paramount, following its $8 billion merger with Skydance Media in August last year.
Subsequently, Paramount laid off approximately 2,000 staffers, representing 10 percent of its workforce. Earlier, MTV also canceled its long-running series Ridiculousness after reports surfaced that host Rob Dyrdek was earning $32 million annually for the show.
Deadline reported that the company plans to refresh its programming and give MTV a facelift moving forward, aligning with the merger's strategic goals. The Independent has reached out to Paramount for further comment on these developments.
