Monty Don bids emotional farewell to Gardeners' World

Monty Don has issued an emotional farewell to viewers ahead of his final episode of Gardeners' World, bringing a 23-year association with the BBC horticultural programme to a close.

In a video message posted on Instagram, Don said: "This Friday will be my very last Gardeners' World. I began 23 years ago. For 16 years, we've been filming in this garden with my various dogs, and that's come to an end."

He added: "But it's a brilliant programme, as ever, and it's been a complete privilege to be part of it. So join me on Friday for the last time."

A Personal Farewell from Longmeadow

In the clip, filmed at his Longmeadow garden, Don called to his dog Ned, saying "Shall we go?", with Ned seen jumping over one of the fences.

The post's caption read: "It's the end of an era as Monty presents his final programme of this series from Longmeadow this Friday. Tune in at 8pm on BBC Two for an emotional farewell to a much-loved chapter of Gardeners' World."

Fans React to the Announcement

Fans flooded the comments section with tributes. One wrote: "Thank you, Monty, for teaching a generation of us that gardening isn't about perfection but patience, paying attention and enjoying the small moments. Wishing you a slower pace, long mornings with the dogs, and a garden that's finally just yours again."

Another commented: "Thank you, Monty and Gardeners' World!" A third posted: "'Sir Monty' would be a lovely and well deserved end to the year and your wonderful contributions to gardening. You more than deserve it! Thank you."

Exit Announced Earlier This Year

Don originally announced his departure in September, saying: "Throughout that time - and around 700 programmes - I have had the privilege of sharing my own abiding passion for gardens and gardening with an equally passionate, and often equally knowledgeable audience."

He added: "That connection with millions, not just in Britain but across the world, who share a love of gardens, plants and the natural world is something I have always treasured and which I increasingly believe to be at the heart of a life well lived."

Don confirmed he would continue working with the BBC on other projects, saying: "I look forward to continuing to work with and for the BBC on other projects, as well as following new avenues. And of course, I will still be gardening, dog by side, here at Longmeadow."
