Music manager Louis Walsh has launched fresh accusations against former colleague Simon Cowell, claiming that he and fellow judge Sharon Osbourne were deliberately kept unaware of crucial production details during their time on The X Factor. The Irish personality, who helped shape the careers of Boyzone and Westlife, served as a judge on the ITV talent show from its 2004 inception alongside Cowell and Osbourne.
Allegations of Production Secrecy
During a recent appearance on Irish radio station Today FM, the 73-year-old Walsh asserted that while he and Osbourne remained uninformed about voting patterns and contestant progress, Cowell possessed comprehensive knowledge about which acts would advance each week. "People don't believe about the show, that it was real," Walsh told host Ray Foley while discussing preparations for an upcoming X Factor documentary.
"We didn't know the votes, we didn't know the acts, we didn't know anything, Sharon Osbourne and I, we didn't know," Walsh emphasized. When pressed about conspiracy theories surrounding the show's production, he confirmed: "Yeah, all of the things, we didn't know. We didn't know who we were gonna get, what we were gonna do, we didn't know the votes, Cowell knew it all."
Historical Context of the Feud
The relationship between Walsh and Cowell has fluctuated between friendship and professional rivalry over their approximately twenty-year association. Last month, Walsh disclosed that communication between the two has completely ceased. This latest controversy follows previous disputes, including Walsh labeling Cowell a "has-been" in what sources describe as a "withering putdown."
Insiders suggest the current rift stems from Cowell's Netflix documentary "Simon Cowell: The Next Act," released late last year, which featured former Pop Idol judge Pete Waterman instead of Walsh. According to sources close to the situation, Walsh was reportedly "left furious" by this snub, believing his extensive experience made him the more logical choice for inclusion.
Broader Criticism of Cowell's Current Projects
Walsh has extended his criticism beyond The X Factor allegations, taking aim at Cowell's other major television venture. In comments to The Sun, he dismissed Britain's Got Talent as past its prime, stating: "BGT, who cares?! It's not what it was. Back in the old days, it was pulling in 12 million, and the whole country cared who won. Now it doesn't feel like that, who even won last year?"
The music manager further suggested that Cowell's professional instincts have diminished, claiming he is "surrounded by people who won't tell him the truth." Walsh also alleged that Cowell's fiancée, Lauren Silverman, controls his phone and diary, contributing to their communication breakdown.
Previous Denials and Legal Resolution
Simon Cowell has previously denied similar allegations about possessing advance knowledge of voting results. In 2010, he resolved a complaint with Heat magazine after the publication claimed he knew which contestants received the most votes weekly. The magazine subsequently published an apology stating this assertion was untrue.
The Daily Mail has contacted representatives for both Louis Walsh and Simon Cowell for comment regarding the latest allegations. The pair first collaborated before achieving television fame, with their on-screen clashes over song choices and contestant critiques becoming signature moments of The X Factor's early seasons.
Despite once describing Cowell as having "changed my life," Walsh now acknowledges their friendship has completely dissolved, admitting they haven't spoken in years. Text messages reportedly obtained by The Sun allegedly feature Walsh stating Cowell is "done now" and "surrounded by fakes," though these claims remain unverified.
