Lily Allen left fans in awe at Manchester's AO Arena with a beautifully acted show that combined music and theatre. The English popstar brought her West End Girl album to life on stage, delivering a performance that was both emotionally charged and visually stunning.
A Long-Awaited Return
Fans had waited years for new music from Lily Allen. On October 24 last year, she finally released her West End Girl album, which many listeners quickly dissected for subtle references to her split with Stranger Things star David Harbour. They didn't have to listen very hard to catch the nods.
The album tour quickly became one of the hottest tickets in town, with overwhelming demand prompting Allen to add an extra Manchester date. The show is a complete play-through of the West End Girl album, which means fans miss out on some of her earlier, bigger hits. However, the performance more than makes up for it.
Opening Act Delights
Fans who arrived early enough to see the opening act, string ensemble Dallas Minor Trio, were treated to a taste of those classic tunes. The cellists performed The Fear, Not Fair, LDN, and Smile, with the crowd providing vocals. There were massive cheers as the trio ended with Allen's 2009 hit F*** You.
It was an enjoyable warm-up. Following a 30-minute interval, the Hammersmith-born popstar arrived to roars from the crowd. Sparkling in a silver one-piece wrapped like a bow, she dazzled the AO Arena with raw charisma and attitude.
A Theatrical Journey
Opening with the album's title track, West End Girl, Allen took fans through a vivid retelling of her breakup journey. She appeared overcome with emotion during Relapse, and it was hard not to get swept up in the endless transition of emotions. Much like the album suggests, this truly is a stage performance, showing Lily's maturity following a long journey since she broke onto the music scene in 2006 with debut album Alright, Still.
The biggest crowd-pleasers were Madeline, Pussy Palace, and Beg for Me. Flawless vocals and swagger, this performance had it all in spades. Despite the heavy subject matter, there were laughs as she took a quick vape break and asked, "Who the f*** is Madeline?"
Attention to Detail
An on-stage fridge stashed away a bottle of wine, snacks, and oat milk. Some of the smaller details of the acted scenes were not always clear to see from the stalls to her left. However, there was a magical moment in which she wrapped herself in a dress made out of receipts.
The costume changes were almost as frequent as the vape breaks. Before long, she was in a fuzzy blue number and then a white dress to finish. Just like the running order on the album, the performance ended with Fruityloop.
No Words Needed
There were no speeches, chats with the audience, or explanations offered. The music and performance spoke for itself. It was a story of love, heartbreak, and trauma, told beautifully. At the end, the 41-year-old took the stage for her curtain call like the true West End Girl she is.
