King and Conqueror Filming Locations: Stunning Icelandic Waterfalls and Hot Springs Revealed

The BBC drama King and Conqueror has returned for its second episode, showcasing spectacular Icelandic landscapes that have captivated viewers. The series, starring James Norton as Harold of Wessex and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William of Normandy, was filmed in Iceland in March 2024.

Key scenes, including the recreation of the Battle of Hastings, were shot at Hvalfjördur, a 50-minute drive from Reykjavik. The battle used 180 extras and 50 horses on an Icelandic farm. Sets were built to resemble Norman castles and London locations, with studio work also near Reykjavik.

Hvalfjörður offers natural wonders such as Glymur, Iceland’s second tallest waterfall, and the smaller Fossárrétt waterfall, just 300 metres from the main road. The Hvammsvík Hot Springs, created by entrepreneur Skúli Mogensen, provide a scenic coastal bathing experience.

Additional exterior scenes were filmed at Heiðmörk Nature Reserve, home to 26 tree species and 60 wild bird species. Visitors can hike Mount Helgafell for panoramic views or explore the Búrfell crater. Activities include hiking, fishing, and horseback riding.

James Norton commented on the challenging weather: 'One day you'd need thermal pads underneath your armour, and the next you'd be desperate for a fan.' He also embraced Iceland's cold swimming culture, calling it 'a dream'.
