Acclaimed Crime Drama Kin Set for Major Comeback with Third Series
The gritty television drama Kin, which has been hailed by critics and fans as one of the finest shows ever produced, is officially making a highly anticipated return for a third series. This announcement comes after years of uncertainty surrounding the future of the programme, which follows the turbulent lives of the Kinsella crime family in gangland Dublin.
Original Cast Reunites for Summer Filming
Production is scheduled to commence in July, with the entire original cast expected to return. This includes Charlie Cox, the Daredevil star whose Hollywood commitments had previously cast doubt on his availability. At 43, Cox has reportedly carved out a window in his busy filming schedule to reprise his role as Michael Kinsella in Dublin.
The ensemble also features Aidan Gillen as the reluctant gang boss Frank Kinsella, Emmett J Scanlan as Jimmy Kinsella, and Francis Magee as the unpredictable patriarch Brendan Kinsella. Sam Keeley, who portrayed Frank's hapless son Eric 'Viking' Kinsella, is also set to return, alongside Marie Doyle Kennedy.
Overcoming Production Hurdles and Studio Bankruptcy
The revival marks a significant triumph for the series, which faced considerable obstacles. The original production studio, Bron, filed for bankruptcy, and several cast members, including Cox, pursued successful careers in Hollywood, leading to fears that the show might never return.
However, persistent efforts by broadcasters BBC in the UK and RTE in Ireland have secured the programme's future. A source revealed to The Irish Sun that both networks have been working diligently for years to regain control, paving the way for not only a third series but also planned fourth and fifth seasons.
Cast Enthusiasm and Critical Acclaim Fuel Anticipation
Emmett J Scanlan hinted at the show's return during an appearance on This Morning, mentioning potential bidding wars and significant interest from various parties. He expressed his eagerness to revisit the role of Jimmy, stating, "I hope it comes back again, I'd love to take on the role of Jimmy again. I loved it."
Kin originally aired between 2021 and 2023, captivating audiences on BBC, RTE, and later on Netflix and iPlayer. The series has garnered a perfect 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes for its first season, with fans praising its brilliant writing and superb acting. One enthusiast described it as "the best series I have seen, could not stop watching it."
Broadcasters Remain Cautiously Optimistic
While excitement builds, an RTE spokesperson offered a more guarded statement, telling the Irish Mirror, "Kin has been an extremely popular series for RTE and if and when there's something to announce, we will be delighted to do so." This suggests formal announcements may follow, but the groundwork is firmly in place.
With filming set to begin in summer and additional series already in the pipeline, the Kinsella family's saga is poised to expand its legacy, with insiders suggesting it could achieve a stature comparable to iconic series like The Sopranos.
