Justin Berfield Breaks Silence After 20 Years Ahead of Malcolm in the Middle Reboot
Justin Berfield Breaks Silence Ahead of Malcolm Reboot

Justin Berfield, the actor best known for playing Reese in the hit sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, has resurfaced after years away from the public eye. This comes just ahead of the show's highly anticipated reboot on Hulu, titled Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair.

Stepping Away from Hollywood Stardom

In his first interview in almost 20 years, Berfield, now 40, opened up about his decision to leave the acting world after the original series concluded in 2006. Speaking on The Joe Vulpis Podcast, he stated, 'I fully just stopped acting.' He explained that he transitioned to working behind the scenes as a writer and producer, but never sought the level of fame achieved by stars like Leonardo DiCaprio.

'I just never reached that level where I was that in demand, I guess,' Berfield continued. 'I had no intention of ever becoming like Leonardo DiCaprio. Like, that guy, he's huge. He starred in TV, did comedy, and then he exploded but that was never my intention as an actor.'

A Low-Key Life as a Stay-at-Home Dad

Describing himself as 'low key,' Berfield revealed that he has spent the last several years as a stay-at-home dad to his two children, whom he shares with his wife, Liza Almeida. When asked why he has avoided interviews for nearly two decades, he admitted it was because he had no projects to promote.

'I've always said no because I wasn't working on anything. I'm just a stay-at-home dad so why am I gonna do a podcast?' he said. 'I'm just chilling at home with my kid.'

Return to the Spotlight with Hulu Revival

Despite his extended hiatus, Berfield is making a comeback in the four-episode revival of Malcolm in the Middle. The limited series reunites the original cast, including Bryan Cranston, Frankie Muniz, Jane Kaczmarek, and Christopher Kennedy Masterson, to celebrate Lois and Hal's wedding anniversary.

The official synopsis reads: 'After shielding himself and his daughter from his family for over a decade, Malcolm is dragged back into their orbit when Hal and Lois demand his presence at their 40th anniversary party.'

Notable Absences and Cast Changes

The only original star not returning is Erik Per Sullivan, who played Malcolm's younger brother, Dewey. Sullivan, now 34, retired from acting shortly after the show ended in 2006 and has remained out of the limelight. In the Hulu reboot, his role has been recast with Caleb Ellsworth-Clark.

The original sitcom, which ran from 2000 to 2006, centered on child prodigy Malcolm, played by Frankie Muniz, as he navigated life within his dysfunctional family. Reflecting on the revival experience, Muniz expressed enthusiasm, saying on a podcast last year, 'I'm not exaggerating when I say filming this reboot, like I loved it so much, way more than I ever thought I could have.'

Anticipation and Expectations

Bryan Cranston, who gained A-list success with Breaking Bad after Malcolm in the Middle, recently commented on the revival. 'I think people will be surprised, in a sense, where everybody is and the story,' he said. 'But it's only four episodes…. It's hard to fit in 20 years of stuff into four 30-minute episodes, right? But I think people are going to be very happy with what they came up with.'

Malcolm in the Middle: Life's Still Unfair will be available to stream on Hulu and Disney+ starting April 10, marking a nostalgic return for fans of the beloved series.
