James McAvoy Transforms for Frankie Boyle's Glasgow-Set TV Adaptation 'Meantime'
James McAvoy's Drastic Makeover for Frankie Boyle TV Show

Scottish actor James McAvoy has been spotted on set in Glasgow sporting a radically altered appearance for his role in the forthcoming television adaptation of comedian Frankie Boyle's debut novel, Meantime. The 46-year-old star, known for films like Split and X-Men, looked profoundly dishevelled with long grey hair and a scruffy beard, embodying his character Felix McAveety, a Valium addict embroiled in a murder mystery.

Filming Underway for Gritty Glasgow Drama

Production has commenced for this brand-new series, which is based on Boyle's 2022 novel and set in Glasgow in 2015. The plot follows Felix as he attempts to uncover the truth behind the killing of his best friend, Marina. McAvoy was photographed wearing a light blue baggy suit with a cream shirt, and in another scene, a black puffer jacket, brown jumper, grey joggers, and boots, highlighting his character's unkempt demeanour.

Sky's Ambitious Project Gains Momentum

Back in October last year, industry outlet Deadline revealed that Sky had secured a deal to adapt Boyle's book into a TV programme. A TV source commented to The Sun in December, noting that this project is regarded as one of the most intriguing in Sky's portfolio, aligning with their strategy to produce gritty narratives from diverse creators. The source drew parallels to Sky's recent series The Death of Bunny Munro, starring Matt Smith, suggesting Meantime will similarly feature a high-profile lead, though casting details remain closely guarded.

Plot Details and Supporting Characters

According to the novel's synopsis, Felix's investigation leads him to seek help from an eclectic group of friends, including a GP, a trade unionist, a screenwriter, crime novelist Jane Pickford, and his neighbour Donnie. Their journey delves into themes such as Scottish radical politics, Artificial Intelligence, cults, and secret agents, set against the backdrop of post-referendum Scotland. Filming is taking place in Glasgow and at Sky's Elstree Studios near London, with the series expected to premiere next year.
