Jack Shepherd, star of Wycliffe, dies aged 85

The world of British television and theatre is in mourning following the announcement that the celebrated actor Jack Shepherd has died at the age of 85.

His passing was confirmed by his family, who revealed he died peacefully in hospital after a short illness, with his wife and children by his side.

A Storied Career on Screen and Stage

For many, Jack Shepherd was the definitive face of Detective Superintendent Charles Wycliffe in the long-running ITV drama Wycliffe.

He led the popular series, which was based on the novels by W.J. Burley, from 1993 to 1998, investigating crimes against the backdrop of Cornwall.

His compelling performance anchored the show, alongside co-stars Jimmy Yuill as DI Doug Kersey and Helen Masters as DI Lucy Lane.

Shepherd's talents also graced the silver screen, most notably in the 2007 blockbuster The Golden Compass, where he shared the screen with A-list stars Daniel Craig and Nicole Kidman.

From BAFTA Nominee to Olivier Award Winner

Shepherd's career was marked by critical acclaim and prestigious awards.

His breakthrough role came in the 1970s television series Bill Brand, where his portrayal of a rebellious Labour MP earned him a BAFTA nomination.

His prowess on the stage was equally recognised; he won an Olivier Award for his performance in the original 1983 production of David Mamet's Glengarry Glen Ross.

Beyond acting, Shepherd was also an accomplished playwright, a creative path he discovered after initially studying fine art.

He once reflected on his time at art school, stating, "I got addicted to the creative process when I was at art school, from the age of 18 to 22."

A Legacy Remembered by Fans and Family

The news of his death was met with an outpouring of tributes from fans on social media, who remembered him fondly for his iconic roles.

One fan reminisced about his Sunday night television presence, writing, "Wycliffe was my Sunday night show back in the days after Heartbeat and before London's Burning!"

Jack Shepherd is survived by his wife, Ann Scott, and his five children: Jan, Jake, Victoria, Catherine, and Ben.

His agents at Markham, Froggatt & Irwin said they were "very proud and honoured to have been part of Jack’s illustrious career," describing his passing as a sad loss to all who knew him and his work.
