ITV Ban Demand After England World Cup Coverage Backlash

World Cup viewers are calling for ITV to be banned from broadcasting England matches in the future after widespread complaints about the broadcaster's coverage of the Three Lions' quarter-final victory over Norway. The match, which saw Jude Bellingham shine with a crucial equaliser just before half-time and the winning goal in extra time, was marred for many by what they perceived as subpar commentary and interviewing.

Commentary Duo Under Fire

Lead commentator Sam Matterface and co-commentator Lee Dixon faced the brunt of the criticism. On X, formerly known as Twitter, user @The_Tman10 wrote: “Lee Dixon undoubtedly for me the worst co-commentator. I just don’t understand what he actually brings to the watching viewer? He offers zero insight, seems bored to death and just hammers folk… Also ridiculously biased. Rather listen to chalk on a blackboard.” Another user, @LDC_9814, added: “Whoever decided that Sam Matterface & Lee Dixon should be the leading commentary duo for ITV needs sacking.”

Interviews and Referee Analysis Criticised

Reporter Gabriel Clarke also drew ire for his post-match interviews with Jude Bellingham and manager Thomas Tuchel, with some accusing ITV of trying to create division. User @FootieWriter remarked: “Sorry, what are ITV doing? Are they trying to drive a wedge between the manager and the players?!” Additionally, the inclusion of American refereeing expert Cristina Unkel to explain contentious decisions was poorly received. User @Kev_COYS_ wrote: “Once this World Cup is over, ITV must never be allowed to broadcast live football ever again, Matterface, Dixon, and some American Doris trying to explain the rules of the game to a British audience.”

BBC to Broadcast Semi-Final

Disgruntled fans will be relieved to learn that England's World Cup semi-final against Argentina will be broadcast on the BBC instead of ITV. Should England win, they would reach their first World Cup final since lifting the Jules Rimet trophy 60 years ago.
