Former EastEnders actor Himesh Patel has secured a prominent role in the eagerly awaited reboot of the iconic science fiction series, The X Files. The 35-year-old performer, who first gained widespread recognition as Tamwar Masood on the long-running BBC soap opera, is embarking on a thrilling new chapter in his career with this high-profile television project.
Major Casting Announcement for Streaming Reboot
American streaming service Hulu officially greenlit the revival last month, with acclaimed filmmaker Ryan Coogler attached to write, direct, and produce the pilot episode. Patel will appear alongside BAFTA-nominated actress Danielle Deadwyler, with both stars portraying two distinctly different FBI agents assigned to investigate unexplained phenomena.
Fresh Characters and Creative Team
According to industry publication Variety, the reboot will introduce completely new characters rather than reimagined versions of the original series' protagonists Fox Mulder and Dana Scully. The logline describes "two highly decorated but vastly different FBI agents forming an unlikely bond" as they work together on mysterious cases.
Original X Files creator Chris Carter returns as executive producer, while Jennifer Yale, known for her work on The Copenhagen Test, has been appointed as showrunner. Coogler's involvement stems from his mother's affection for the original series, which aired for eleven seasons and became a cultural phenomenon.
Patel's Career Evolution
This casting represents another significant milestone in Patel's professional journey since departing EastEnders in 2016. The actor achieved international recognition two years later with his lead role in the musical comedy film Yesterday, which served as his breakthrough cinematic performance.
Patel and Deadwyler previously collaborated on the 2021 miniseries Station Eleven, establishing a working relationship that continues with this new project. Deadwyler brings considerable acclaim to the production, having earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Actress for her powerful portrayal of Mamie Till-Mobley in the historical drama Till.
Personal Reflections on Early Career
In a 2024 interview with British GQ Hype, Patel reflected candidly on his early experiences as a teenage actor on EastEnders. He described struggling with acne during that period as particularly challenging, noting that "when you've got acne in front of millions of people every week in EastEnders, it's a whole other thing."
The actor acknowledged the pressure he felt during those formative years, stating: "You just kind of feel defective because you're surrounded by actors. Everyone gets spots, but I just felt the pressure." Despite these difficulties, Patel has successfully transitioned from soap opera stardom to substantial film and television roles.
The original X Files series remains available for streaming on Disney+, while production details for the Hulu reboot continue to develop. This casting announcement has generated considerable excitement among fans of both the original series and Patel's growing body of work.
