HBO has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming Harry Potter television series, confirming a premiere date of Christmas 2026. The two-minute preview, unveiled at a London press event on Wednesday, introduces the new cast for the first season, which adapts J.K. Rowling's 'Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone'.
The series stars Dominic McLaughlin as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley, all cast after an extensive open search for British children aged nine to 11. Adult cast members include John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, and Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape. Francesca Gardiner, a writer on 'Succession', serves as showrunner, with Mark Mylod directing multiple episodes.
The trailer hints at iconic moments from the book and 2001 film, including Harry's meeting with Hagrid (Nick Frost), the Sorting Hat ceremony, and his first Quidditch match. The series, produced at Leavesden Studios in Hertfordshire, aims to delve deeper into the books than the eight-film franchise. Warner Bros Discovery's JB Perrette called it 'the biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming'.
Original star Daniel Radcliffe praised McLaughlin, saying, 'I'm sure Dominic is going to be better than me.' The series has faced controversy, including death threats against Essiedu over his casting as Snape, a role previously played by white actor Alan Rickman. Essiedu told The Times he uses the backlash as 'fuel' for his performance, emphasising the series' themes of love and acceptance.
J.K. Rowling, whose anti-transgender comments have drawn criticism, serves as an executive producer. HBO's Casey Bloys defended the series, stating Rowling's views are personal and not infused into the show. Lithgow noted he has been 'stung' by criticism but believes the books are 'on the side of the angels'.
