A heated exchange on Monday's (November 2) episode of Good Morning Britain drew frustration from viewers. Hosts Susanna Reid and Ed Balls were joined in the studio by regular contributors Kevin Maguire and Gillian Keegan to discuss major stories, including King Charles's Caribbean tour.
Clash over slavery apology
The discussion turned to the monarch's upcoming address to Commonwealth leaders, where he is expected to speak with "unflinching honesty" about the transatlantic slave trade. Susanna noted that the prime minister has already said he is open to the possibility of the UK formally apologising for its role in the slave trade, and possibly some kind of aid package.
Kevin responded: "The fact that he hasn't apologised or said sorry is a stain on Britain, because it is a gruesome part of our country's past." Ed observed that Tony Blair, David Cameron and Rishi Sunak had come close to apologising but always feared the question of what would be done about it.

Gillian then criticised Andy Burnham, saying: "I think Andy Burnham has actually been irresponsible. The King is out there on a diplomatic mission, and he is out there having to carefully tread this line." Kevin challenged her, asking whether Tony Blair was wrong to apologise for the potato famine. When Gillian said she did not have a strong view, Kevin pressed her repeatedly, leading Susanna to intervene: "Hang on, Kevin. Let Gillian respond."
Gillian asked: "What is the point of an apology that is slightly meaningless?" Kevin continued his challenge, and Gillian countered: "You do this every time. Nobody condones any part of the slave trade at all." Kevin replied: "So, why don't you confront it? Instead of running away."
Viewers took to X to vent their frustration. One wrote: "This is unlistenable with them shouting over each other." Another said: "The f****** noise. Utter s**** TV." A third declared: "Switching this off." Another commented: "Stop talking over everyone!" However, one viewer defended Kevin, writing: "Go @Kevin_Maguire. Your comments on #Slavery are spot on."
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays on ITV1 and ITVX at 6am.
