Gladiators Icon Diane Youdale Praises BBC Reboot and Hosts

Gladiators Legend Diane Youdale Endorses BBC Revival and New Presenters

Diane Youdale, the iconic Gladiator known as Jet from the 1990s, has exclusively shared her heartfelt opinions on the BBC's successful reboot of the classic television series. Youdale, who became a household name during the show's original run from 1992 to 1996, expressed overwhelming support for the updated version and its current hosts, Bradley and Barney Walsh.

Embracing the Modern Evolution of a Classic Show

In a candid discussion, Youdale revealed that the BBC's revival, which launched two years ago, has captivated millions of new viewers by skillfully blending nostalgia with contemporary appeal. She remarked, "It is extraordinary because they have taken the best elements of everything that we did and then some." The former Gladiator praised the current contestants, noting, "The Gladiators are not only beautiful but they've come in functionally fit and are the best version I've seen across the globe to date."

Reflecting on her personal connection to the programme, Youdale described the emotional experience of watching from home, saying, "I love it and it feels amazing to be in my mid 50s sitting on my sofa thinking I'm safe, snuggled up with my cat and blanket and it's your turn now." This sentiment highlights the show's enduring legacy and its ability to resonate across generations.

Warm Approval for the Father-Son Hosting Team

Initially, Youdale admitted to some reservations about the choice of hosts, questioning why original figures were not involved. However, she quickly changed her mind after observing Bradley and Barney Walsh in action. "I was initially a bit like 'oh they're getting everything' and 'why aren't they using some of the originals?' because we know the show, and I am a trained presenter, but when you watch them they're really good," she confessed.

She went on to commend their dynamic, stating, "They're a nice addition and I think they're fun, relevant and I love the little skits and things that they do." Youdale also pointed out a meaningful family tie to the original series, explaining, "Also, Gladiators is in their DNA because Donna [Bradley's wife] was one of our heads of our original G Force cheerleaders and they met around that time."

Family Connections and Show Legacy

This familial link was further emphasised by Bradley Walsh himself, who previously disclosed his wife Donna's involvement as an associate producer and cheerleading coordinator during the original Gladiators era. He shared, "My wife, Donna, was involved in the original series running the cheerleading G Force and was an associate producer on the show so I used to visit her and watch the show being made and when my son, Barney, was born it was still on air so we used to take him to watch the show."

Bradley added, "It was a family affair for us and so when the team at Hungry Bear spoke to us and said they were looking for a family appeal to the show and asked if we would we like to host it, we jumped at the chance." This background underscores the seamless transition and authentic connection the Walsh duo brings to the revamped programme.

Gladiators continues to air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer every Saturday at 8pm, maintaining its position as a beloved staple of British entertainment. Diane Youdale's endorsement serves as a powerful testament to the reboot's success in honouring the past while innovating for today's audience.
