Matt Smith, who plays Daemon Targaryen in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon, has suggested the series may feature an excessive number of sex scenes. The 39-year-old actor, best known for his role in Doctor Who, admitted he questioned the necessity of some intimate moments during filming.
Speaking to Rolling Stone UK, Smith revealed he often asked: 'Do we need another sex scene?' The response from producers was affirmative: 'Yeah, we do.' He grappled with whether the show should faithfully adapt the source material or adjust for modern sensibilities, ultimately concluding that the duty lies in representing the books 'truthfully and honestly, as they were written.'
When asked if his character was involved in many of these scenes, Smith replied: 'Yeah — slightly too much, if you ask me.' The comments echo those of Emilia Clarke, who played Daenerys Targaryen in the original series, and previously expressed discomfort with nude scenes, calling them 'cringeworthy.'
House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and focuses on the Targaryen dynasty during the Dance of the Dragons civil war. The 10-part series, premiering on HBO on August 21, also stars Paddy Considine, Steve Toussaint, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, and Olivia Cooke.
