Na Hong-Jin's sci-fi thriller 'Hope', competing at the Cannes Film Festival, received a seven-minute standing ovation at its premiere. The film, starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, is a two-hour and forty-minute epic alien thriller set in a remote Korean village near the Demilitarized Zone.
During the screening, three action set-pieces drew exuberant applause, though enthusiasm was tempered by the film's length. Na praised the audience for staying with the film, noting that had it ended 20 minutes earlier, the applause would have been through the roof.
The cast includes Korean star Hwang Jung-min, Zo In-sung, Hoyeon from 'Squid Game', Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton. The plot follows police chief Bum-seok as he investigates reports of a tiger appearing in Hope Harbor, leading to a confrontation with a reality beyond belief.
'Hope' marks Na's fourth film at Cannes, following 'The Wailing' (2016), 'The Yellow Sea' (2011), and 'The Chaser' (2008). The film is produced by Forged Films and financed by Plus M Entertainment. Neon has acquired North American and English-language rights, while Mubi secured rights for several other territories.
