Fans Hail John Cena's Peacemaker as Perfect Alternative to The Boys
Fans Hail Peacemaker as Perfect Alternative to The Boys

As the hugely popular show The Boys has drawn to a close, fans are championing another series featuring supervillains masquerading as superheroes, which viewers claim is 'just as good' as the smash-hit Prime Video programme.

The End of an Era

After five seasons of varying critical reception, Eric Kripke's superhero drama has reached its brutal yet moving finale, with the last episode of the fifth and final series dropping on 20 May. The show explored what life would genuinely be like if superheroes existed among us, likely wielding as much influence as politicians, and occasionally revered as gods. The series delves further into what might unfold should these superheroes begin exploiting their abilities for personal gain.

It centres on a group called The Boys, who embark on a daring mission to uncover the truth about superhero collective The Seven and Vought, the multibillion-dollar corporation that manages them while concealing their dark secrets.

The fifth series attracted more than 55 million viewers, making it the most-watched to date according to Prime Video. Given its enormous popularity, finding something fresh to watch that could possibly fill the void it leaves behind is no easy task, but many couldn't stop singing the praises of Peacemaker on Prime.

Fans Turn to Reddit for Recommendations

Devoted fans have turned to social media, including Reddit's film suggestions forum, to seek recommendations on what other programmes might serve as a worthy alternative.

"I'm a huge fan of The Boys. I really enjoy the dark humour, gritty action, wild characters, and the whole idea of superheroes not being so super," they explained, referring to the main characters in the show that go from being protagonists to antagonists.

"I'm looking for movies or shows that give off the same kind of energy. Anything with satire, chaos, anti heroes, or an over the top unpredictable feel would be perfect. What do you recommend?"

Fellow users quickly stepped in to help, with numerous people sharing their favourite suggestions. However, one programme was highlighted more frequently than others, with many declaring it was an ideal substitute for the popular Prime series — Peacemaker.

What Is Peacemaker?

Peacemaker is an American superhero television programme exclusive to HBO Max, which launched for British audiences earlier this year. It's centred on the DC character who features as one of the antagonists in The Suicide Squad — which became its own blockbuster film in 2016.

The series tracks the superhero Peacemaker, portrayed by John Cena, who following his recovery from injuries is compelled to join a covert operations team tasked with eliminating parasites that have infiltrated human hosts across the globe. Yet, to achieve global peace, he must navigate the boundary between hero and villain.

It's earned an impressive 93% approval score on Rotten Tomatoes, while achieving a rating of 8.2 out of 10 on IMDb, based on more than 193,000 reviews.

Fan Reactions

Fans flocked to the Reddit thread to voice their opinions, with some suggesting it serves as an excellent alternative to The Boys, given it similarly features superheroes who could equally be perceived as supervillains.

"This show is possibly the best currently running," one person praised. Another user agreed and said: "best show ever."

All five seasons of The Boys is currently available to stream on Amazon Prime Video, while Peacemaker can be watched on HBO Max.
