Emmerdale star Jeff Hordley has opened up for the first time about his character Cain Dingle's upcoming prostate cancer diagnosis on the ITV soap, sharing insights into the emotional storyline that will see a dramatic shift in the iconic figure.
Cain Dingle's Heartbreaking Diagnosis and Isolation
In a special episode airing next week, Cain Dingle will be diagnosed with aggressive, yet localised, prostate cancer. The storyline takes a poignant turn as Cain faces this news alone, with his wife Moira Dingle charged with double murder before his medical appointment. Actor Jeff Hordley explains that Cain's inner thoughts will be revealed as he processes the diagnosis, highlighting his fear of mortality.
As Cain becomes overwhelmed by the consultant's words, he flees the hospital and keeps his condition secret. This leads to mounting denial and anger, sparking clashes with other villagers. Hordley notes that Cain desires solitude, especially without Moira by his side, adding depth to his emotional turmoil.
Jeff Hordley on Cain's Mortality and Transformation
Jeff Hordley has revealed that Cain fears his illness could be fatal, drawing from personal loss as his character's mother died from cancer. He stated, "Yes, I think he’s faced with his own mortality here and he knows this is something that could finish him off." With Moira potentially imprisoned, Cain worries about who will care for their children, adding to his mental burden.
Hordley emphasised that viewers will witness a very different Cain as the plot unfolds. He shared, "I think it will change him. I think when something like this happens to you, your life suddenly has a different lens on it, a different filter on it." He confirmed that this storyline marks a permanent shift, saying, "It’s definitely going to change him, for sure. I don’t think we’re going to have a return to the Cain of old."
Raising Awareness and the Honour of the Storyline
Jeff Hordley expressed honour in being entrusted with this significant plot, aiming to raise awareness about prostate cancer. He highlighted the importance of the message, particularly for men over 55, noting that one in eight people in the UK are diagnosed. Hordley said, "We want to tell the story of a man who doesn’t normally talk about his feelings - I think that’s probably why they chose my character for this particular story."
He hopes the storyline will encourage viewers to get checked, stating, "If we can get people getting out there and getting the PSA test done - even if just one or a handful of people do it that would be a result." Hordley added that this is his first major illness plot on the show, calling it a real challenge and honour.
Special Episode Format and Future Challenges
The episode, directed by Paul Copeland, will feature a unique format with the camera focused on Cain while others are in soft focus, occasionally hearing his inner thoughts. Hordley described it as an exciting project, though he joked about not wanting to watch himself for 22 minutes as the focal point.
Regarding Cain and Moira's future, Hordley addressed the obstacles they face, including his diagnosis and her arrest. He shared, "There’s a series of obstacles and hurdles that lay in front of them that I think are really going to challenge them as a couple." He remained uncertain about whether it will make or break their relationship, promising an interesting development for fans.
Emmerdale continues to air weeknights at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX, with this storyline set to captivate audiences and spark important conversations about health and resilience.
