Netflix Cancels Duffer Brothers' 'The Boroughs' After One Season

Netflix has decided not to renew 'The Boroughs', the sci-fi series executive produced by 'Stranger Things' creators the Duffer Brothers, after just one season. The show, which premiered last month, received strong reviews but failed to attract a large audience.

According to sources, there had been discussions about renewing the series, and a writers' room for a second season had even been opened. Some ideas included filming seasons two and three back-to-back. However, the show's modest viewership numbers led to the cancellation.

'The Boroughs' debuted with 5.6 million views in its opening weekend, a figure that rose to 9.5 million in its first full week but then dropped sharply to 3.7 million the following week. The series, described as 'Stranger Things with seniors', features an ensemble cast including Alfred Molina, Geena Davis, Alfre Woodard, Denis O’Hare, Clarke Peters, and Bill Pullman.

The show's high production costs, due to its special effects and star-studded cast, were also a factor in Netflix's decision. This marks the second Duffer Brothers-produced series to be cancelled this year, following 'Something Very Bad Is Going to Happen', which was considered a limited series.

Netflix currently has only one Duffer Brothers series remaining: the animated 'Stranger Things: Tales from ’85'. The Duffers recently signed a lucrative film and TV deal with Paramount.
