DIY SOS fans petition to save BBC show as Nick Knowles reacts

More than 41,000 supporters have signed a petition urging the BBC to reverse its decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027, after the corporation confirmed the show would be paused as part of budget-saving measures.

The petition, titled 'Prevent the cancellation of beloved BBC show DIY SOS', was launched by self-employed plasterer David Claydon, who appeared on the programme last year. The series, presented by Nick Knowles, first aired in 1999 and has built a loyal following over 27 years by renovating the homes of families facing serious illness, disability, bereavement, or construction disasters, with help from local volunteers and tradespeople.

Petition calls on BBC to reconsider

The petition states: "In 2025, I had the extraordinary privilege of contributing to a show on the BBC that has made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals. This wasn't just another reality TV series; it was a beacon of hope for those struggling in difficult circumstances."

It continues: "The show brought together a community of tradespeople who volunteered their time, skills, and resources to make miraculous transformations in people's living situations, changing lives for the better. This program showcased raw and heartfelt stories of real people, grappling with the hardships of everyday life."

"It highlighted the power of compassion and community, bringing viewers not just entertainment, but also a myriad of invaluable life lessons. For the many families it has helped, the show has been nothing less than life-changing, offering them a chance at a fresh start and an improved future."

The petition adds: "Unfortunately, there are discussions underway about cancelling this invaluable show. Ending it means turning away from those in need and ignoring the good it brings."

Fans share support

Supporters have left comments on the petition explaining why they oppose the show being axed. One wrote: "This show does so much good and helps do many people - it's a crime to discontinue." Another commented: "One of the best shows on TV."

A third viewer said: "BBC please don't get rid of DIY SOS, this programme does so much good for people who really need help. Every week the stories of people on the show are heartbreaking and this is an amazing show that changes people's lives! ! We need this kindness on TV." Another remarked: "Leave this show, plenty of rubbish to get rid of. This draws communities together and changed lives. Pure Joyful TV in the real world."

BBC confirms spin-off

In response to the announcement, Nick Knowles said he is "disappointed" by the move but acknowledged the financial pressures facing the broadcaster.

A BBC spokesperson commented: "In light of the BBC's savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore."

"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show's past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year." DIY SOS continues Tuesday, October 27 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8pm.
