More than 41,000 supporters have signed a petition urging the BBC to reconsider its decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027, following the broadcaster's announcement earlier this month.
The petition, titled 'Prevent the cancellation of beloved BBC show DIY SOS', was created by self-employed plasterer David Claydon, who appeared on the show last year.
Show's 27-year legacy
DIY SOS, fronted by presenter Nick Knowles, first aired in 1999 and has built a loyal following over the past 27 years by transforming the homes of families facing severe illness, disability, bereavement, or building disasters, with the help of volunteers and tradespeople from local communities.
The BBC confirmed that the show is set to be rested in 2027, prompting a wave of backlash from members of the public.
Petition urges BBC to reconsider
The petition states: "In 2025, I had the extraordinary privilege of contributing to a show on the BBC that has made a profound impact on the lives of countless individuals. This wasn't just another reality TV series; it was a beacon of hope for those struggling in difficult circumstances."
It continues: "The show brought together a community of tradespeople who volunteered their time, skills, and resources to make miraculous transformations in people's living situations, changing lives for the better. This program showcased raw and heartfelt stories of real people, grappling with the hardships of everyday life."
"It highlighted the power of compassion and community, bringing viewers not just entertainment, but also a myriad of invaluable life lessons. For the many families it has helped, the show has been nothing less than life-changing, offering them a chance at a fresh start and an improved future."
The petition adds: "Unfortunately, there are discussions underway about cancelling this invaluable show. Ending it means turning away from those in need and ignoring the good it brings."
"At a time when reality often feels overwhelmingly challenging, this show stands as a reminder to all of us of the potential we have to make a difference in our communities."
"We urge the BBC to reconsider any plans to cancel this essential program. By preserving it, we continue to foster a spirit of generosity, empathy, and community support that the show so beautifully encapsulates. Let us keep telling these important stories and making a tangible difference in people's lives."
Supporters speak out
Several supporters have left comments on the petition explaining why they do not want to see DIY SOS come to an end. One person wrote: "This show does so much good and helps do many people - it's a crime to discontinue." Another added: "One of the best shows on TV."
A third person said: "BBC please don't get rid of DIY SOS, this programme does so much good for people who really need help. Every week the stories of people on the show are heartbreaking and this is an amazing show that changes people's lives!! We need this kindness on TV."
Following the announcement, DIY SOS presenter Nick said he was "disappointed" by the decision but acknowledged the financial pressures facing the broadcaster.
A BBC spokesperson said: "In light of the BBC’s savings challenges we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore."
"DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year."
DIY SOS continues Tuesday, October 27 on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 8pm.
