The BBC's new reality competition series Destination X has left viewers scratching their heads over a bizarre editing choice in the first episode. The show, which blends elements of The Traitors and Race Across the World, sees contestants transported via helicopter and a windowless coach to mysterious European locations, where they must complete challenges to deduce their whereabouts.
In one particularly confusing segment, contestants found themselves in a picture-lined cubicle in an unknown market square 'bordered by two countries and influenced by all three'. They had to answer multipart questions to earn the right to peek out of one of two windows, with one offering a genuine clue and the other a red herring. The sequence was described as 'hallucinatory' by some viewers, who struggled to follow the logic.
The show is presented by Rob Brydon, who joked 'I'm actually Anton Du Beke' in a nod to the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing. The contestants include a mix of personalities: James, a 23-year-old who has only been on holiday once without his parents; Deborah, a crime author consumed by guilt over white lies; and Nick, an endurance athlete who 'wouldn't let a child win something'.
Viewers are invited to play along via QR codes, placing their own Xs in a virtual map room. However, the convoluted challenges have left many baffled, with one scene featuring local people speaking an unusual language and street signs in French, despite a Café Mozart suggesting a German influence.
The series airs weekly on BBC One, with the winner taking home £100,000.
