The world of British television is in mourning following the death of actor Derek Martin, best known to millions as the iconic Charlie Slater in BBC One's EastEnders. He was 92 years old.
From Bow Butcher to Walford Legend
Born in Bow, east London, in April 1933, Martin's journey to Albert Square was a true East End story. He worked as a butcher at Smithfield Meat Market before boldly leaving in 1962 to pursue his acting dream. His perseverance paid off decades later when he arrived in Walford in 2000 as the head of the chaotic Slater clan.
Martin portrayed the devoted father and taxi driver from 2000 until 2011, becoming the emotional bedrock of one of the soap's most famous families. He continued to make guest appearances until his final departure in 2016. Charlie Slater arrived alongside his mother-in-law Mo Harris and daughters Lynne, Kat, Little Mo, and Zoe, quickly winning the hearts of the nation.
A Life Beyond the Square
While EastEnders defined his later career, Martin's acting credits included roles such as DI Fred Pyle in the BBC's Law & Order. His agent, Sharon Henry, described him as "a truly authentic working-class voice in British television and film."
In a heartfelt statement, his family remembered him as more than just a dad. "He was a friend and supported us through our highs and lows," they said. "He never stopped learning, he loved meeting people and was always generous with his time. We miss him terribly." The family has requested privacy during this difficult time.
Tributes Pour In for a 'Deeply Loved' Colleague
An EastEnders spokesperson paid a moving tribute, stating: "From the moment he arrived, Derek’s portrayal of Charlie Slater instantly cemented him in the hearts of the audience... Charlie would do anything for his family, and much like his character, Derek would do the same for those around him. Derek was deeply loved by all those that worked with him at EastEnders and will always be remembered with great fondness."
Sharon Henry also highlighted his off-screen passions, noting he was a generous member of the charitable Water Rats, an avid golfer, and an all-around good man. Derek Martin's legacy is that of a consummate professional and a cherished father figure, both on-screen and off, whose contribution to British television drama will not be forgotten.
