Couple with 150 Foster Children Break Silence on Alan Titchmarsh Garden Controversy

A couple who appeared on Alan Titchmarsh's popular television programme Love Your Garden have publicly addressed criticism from viewers who claimed their outdoor space was ruined during a makeover. Rob and Margaret Isdale, who have fostered more than 150 children over the years, received a surprise garden transformation in 2019, organised by their daughter Fiona as a gift during Rob's recovery from a quadruple heart bypass operation.

The Unexpected Garden Transformation

Rob Isdale explained the origins of the project: "I had been in hospital and had a quadruple heart bypass. When I came out, my daughter drove me home, and we were standing in the back garden. I joked, 'It would be good if Alan Titchmarsh could come and do my garden'. Unbeknownst to me, she put in the application, and that's how it started." The renovation, which aired recently, saw Alan Titchmarsh and his team devote significant effort to converting the garden into a space inspired by the classic novel The Secret Garden, featuring mock monastery walls and an Elizabethan-inspired design.

Viewer Backlash and Couple's Response

Despite the couple's enthusiasm, the episode sparked criticism on social media platform X, with some viewers insisting the garden had been spoiled. One commenter remarked that Alan and his crew had ruined the "lovely garden" with bricks and concrete, while another claimed it was "too crowded and busy." In response, Rob Isdale stated that he and Margaret were more than happy with the outcome. "I think I saw some things online; there's a bit of fake news. We were supposed to be disappointed, and it quite saddens me because it couldn't be further from the truth. They did a brilliant job, Alan Titchmarsh was great. No complaints at all," he emphasised.

Personal Touches and Lasting Impact

Rob has since made minor alterations to the garden, such as converting the shed into an art studio for his painting hobby and removing a tree that blocked light from the kitchen window. Reflecting on the makeover during the programme, Alan Titchmarsh shared his motivation: "I want this new garden to make them feel as cared for as the children who come to their home." During the grand unveiling, he revealed fictional "ruins of an old abbey" in the garden, which Margaret described as brilliant, and Rob added, "I knew it would be special, but that's extra special. Thank you so much."

The episode continues to air on ITV and ITVX, with Love Your Garden broadcasting at 6.30am, followed by Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh at 7.30am and again on Sunday at 9.30am. The Isdales' story highlights the positive impact of the transformation, despite mixed viewer reactions, and underscores their appreciation for the thoughtful gesture during a challenging time in their lives.
