The week has barely begun, and soap fans are already facing a disruption to their usual viewing, with Coronation Street taken off air tonight.
When the ITV soap, filmed in Salford, returned to screens on Monday (September 6), DC Kit Green was seen left shaken by an unexpected breast cancer diagnosis in another hard-hitting health storyline for the long-running show.
Kit, who arrived in Weatherfield in 2024 after Bernie Winter went searching for her long-lost son, will be diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer, which has spread to his lymph nodes.
Family BRCA Gene Discovery
The discovery comes after the family learns they may carry the familial BRCA gene following the passing of estranged Aunt Celeste, who left behind the devastating family secret.
But as mum Bernie (Jane Hazelgrove) and half-sister Gemma (Dolly Rose Campbell) face testing, unbeknownst to them and viewers, until now, Kit (Jacob Roberts) has already been seeking medical help after concerns for his own health.
NTAs Take Over Tuesday Night
Following the diagnosis scenes, Corrie fans will now have to wait for the story to continue on Wednesday (September 9) night. That is because Tuesday's (September 8) episode has been taken off air, alongside Emmerdale, to make way for live coverage of the National Television Awards.
The star-studded ceremony, now in its 31st year, will be hosted for the sixth time by comedian Joel Dommett at The O2 in London, and will be broadcast live on ITV1 and ITVX from 8pm.
Awards and Nominations
This year, the NTAs are celebrating their first all-female drama performance shortlist – with Gavin And Stacey star Ruth Jones competing with Ella Bruccoleri, Judy Parfitt, Sheridan Smith and Vicky McClure for the prize.
Meanwhile, reality documentaries starring Tyson Fury, Jeremy Clarkson, Stacey Solomon and Joe Swash are also among the shows competing for a prize. They have been nominated in a new category recognising the rise of fly-on-the-wall celebrity-led shows, with At Home With The Furys, Clarkson’s Farm and Stacey & Joe going head-to-head for the inaugural award.
Their competition includes Fletchers’ Family Farm, in which Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher turns to rural life, and the fishing programme led by comedians Bob Mortimer and Paul Whitehouse – Mortimer & Whitehouse: Gone Fishing.
While the soaps may be off air, the soap stars will be out in force. Serial drama sees nominations for Corrie and Emmerdale, going up against Casualty, EastEnders and Hollyoaks – while EastEnders’ Aaron Thiara, Emmerdale’s Jeff Hordley and Coronation Street’s Gareth Pierce are among those up for serial drama performance.
