Karl Stefanovic has left Nine with immediate effect, the network announced on Friday, following controversy over his independent podcast interview with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson. The decision was presented as mutual, but came days after the Today host faced backlash for the interview.
Nine Entertainment stated that it was 'no longer possible' for Stefanovic to host Today while continuing his podcast. The network had previously agreed he would leave at the end of the year, but both parties decided on an immediate departure. It remains unclear if Stefanovic received a payout for the remainder of his £2.8 million contract, which was due to expire in November.
Stefanovic's departure was announced on the breakfast show by co-host Sarah Abo, who became tearful as she described the mixed emotions among the team. Stefanovic later posted a farewell on social media, defending his podcast's focus on free speech and diverse perspectives. He said, 'Freedom of speech here and around the world is what this show is about.'
Nine executives viewed the soft interview with Robinson as a deal-breaker. In an internal email, CEO Matt Stanton acknowledged the significant change, while news chief Fiona Dear emphasised the network's commitment to freedom of speech but stressed the importance of upholding the Nine brand 'built on trust and respect'.
