The award-winning Channel 5 series Surgeons: A Matter of Life or Death returns for its fourth series tonight at 9pm, giving viewers unprecedented access to the operating theatres of one of the UK's largest hospitals.
The show takes viewers inside the 73 theatres at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where surgical teams work to save patients' lives. It offers a unique perspective on cutting-edge techniques and the complex decisions surgeons face daily.
Emma's Groundbreaking Facial Surgery
Tonight's episode introduces 20-year-old Emma, a student set to undergo surgery that will change the shape of her face forever. According to the official synopsis, Emma was born with Apert syndrome, a rare genetic condition that caused her skull to fuse together prematurely, distorting the normal shape of her face.
Surgeon Jaime Grant, described as the only female surgeon in the country to perform this operation, will attempt the Le Fort III procedure, one of the most invasive and challenging surgeries that can be carried out on the face. The synopsis notes that any complications could slice into her brain, leading to death.
Sue's Recurring Tumours
The episode also follows Sue, who underwent surgery 20 years ago for a benign tumour in her spine and believed she was cured. However, the pain returned and scans showed she now has two tumours growing.
The series, first released in 2023, has drawn widespread praise from viewers. One IMDb reviewer wrote: "Unbelievable program. It just goes to show how clever these surgeons are, but, they don't act it."
Another added: "Every episode drags you in, and shows just how much we owe these people. The photography is jaw dropping, and the amount of times you'll unconsciously comment "holy cow" (or your version of) is again, beyond comprehension. Brilliant series!"
Social media users have also praised the show, with one calling it "One of the best medical series' ever made," and another saying "This is an amazing programme with sensationally skilled teams and surgeons. What they do is astounding. Praise just isn't enough."
