Cancelling Emilia Clarke's 'Ponies' Is a Mistake Despite 94% RT

Peacock has cancelled the Cold War thriller Ponies after just one season, sparking disappointment among critics and fans alike. The eight-episode series, starring Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson, earned a 94% Rotten Tomatoes critics' score and was praised for its sharp writing and electric chemistry between the leads.

A Promising Series Cut Short

Set in Soviet Russia during the height of the Cold War, Ponies follows two secretaries: outgoing Twila (Haley Lu Richardson) and bookish Bea (Emilia Clarke), who are thrown together after the mysterious death of their husbands. As the widows investigate the truth, they are recruited as CIA operatives and become entangled in a deadly conspiracy. The series blended humour with a gritty plot, earning comparisons to The Americans but with a unique tone.

Co-creator David Iserson announced the cancellation on Instagram, mourning the premature ending 'for now' after a seven-year journey to bring the show to screen. 'What we made surpassed all of my hopes and dreams for a television show,' he wrote, adding that it was 'not like anything else on television.' He encouraged viewers to watch the series despite its cancellation, signing off: 'Goodbye to Bea and Twila for now. I hope we all get to visit them again.'

Critical and Fan Reaction

Critics hailed the series as an 'unexpected treat,' 'lots of fun,' and 'absolutely thrilling.' The 94% Rotten Tomatoes score reflected widespread acclaim, with particular praise for Clarke and Richardson's on-screen chemistry. The show also featured a standout guest appearance from Harriet Walter as Bea's tough grandmother and a queer storyline that remained largely unexplored, adding to the disappointment.

Fans took to social media to express their frustration. One user wrote on X: 'I need another streaming service to pick this up because the untapped potential is crazy.' Another added: 'The fact that Ponies didn't get renewed for a S2 is absurd. One of my favourite new shows of 2026.' Jeff Conway echoed: 'So disappointed to hear that Ponies has been cancelled at Peacock after just one season. Amazing performances, amazing backdrop, amazing writing, amazing music.'

Unresolved Cliffhanger and Lost Potential

The first season ended on a cliffhanger, leaving key plot threads unresolved. The series had set up layered protagonists, a meaty plot, and romantic tension between Bea and double agent Sasha (Petro Ninovskyi). Senior TV Reporter Asyia Iftikhar, who gave the show a four-star review, noted: 'By far the best part of the entire show is the electric chemistry between Emilia and Haley onscreen, making them a brilliant fictional duo.'

Despite its cancellation, Ponies remains available to stream on Peacock. Metro has reached out to representatives for Emilia Clarke and Haley Lu Richardson for comment.
