Bridgerton's Ruth Gemmell: From Tracy Beaker to Violet Bridgerton

Ruth Gemmell, known to millions as the elegant Dowager Viscountess Violet Bridgerton in Netflix's hit period drama, has a surprising past role that many fans may have forgotten. Before she was navigating Regency-era romance, Gemmell played the troubled mother of a beloved children's TV character.

In 2004, Gemmell portrayed Carly Beaker, the estranged mother of Tracy Beaker, in the BBC television film 'Tracy Beaker: The Movie of Me'. The film, a spin-off from the iconic CBBC series based on Jacqueline Wilson's books, explored Tracy's relationship with her mother, who reappears just before her 13th birthday. Gemmell reprised the role in 2021 for the miniseries 'My Mum Tracy Beaker'.

Born in Bristol in 1967, Gemmell grew up in Barnard Castle and Darlington before moving to London to train at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art. Her early career included roles in 'The Bill' and 'Silent Witness', with a breakthrough in the 1997 film 'Fever Pitch' alongside Colin Firth.

Gemmell was married to actor Ray Stevenson from 1997 to 2005. Stevenson, known for roles in 'Rome' and 'Thor', died in 2023 at age 58. Gemmell has since remarried, though she keeps her husband's identity private, describing him as an 'old friend' and noting the pleasure of being married to a non-actor.

As Bridgerton's fourth season continues, Gemmell's Violet is enjoying a romantic storyline with Lord Marcus Anderson, played by Daniel Francis. The season, focusing on Benedict Bridgerton's love story, has captivated viewers, with the second half set to be released later this month.
