Boyzone have reflected on Stephen Gately's role in the band 17 years after his death in a new documentary now streaming on NOW. The film, called One For The Road, follows the group's reunion shows at London's Emirates Stadium in June 2026, where they dedicated the performances to the legacy of their late bandmate, nicknamed 'Steo'.
Emotional tribute after reunion gig
In one poignant scene after the concert, Ronan Keating pays tribute to the beloved singer. "To see us on a stadium stage, I mean holy s***. We did it for you, Steo. But, by God I wish you could see it," he says.
Ronan, Mikey Graham, Shane Lynch and Keith Duffy all stepped on stage for the comeback show, which they dedicated to Stephen's memory.
Remembering Stephen's role in the band
Stephen died of natural causes on October 10, 2009, aged 33. He was found dead in his home in Mallorca after suffering a pulmonary oedema, an accumulation of fluid in the lungs.
In the Sky documentary, Keith opened up about Stephen's sweet role in the band. He shared: "We all obviously miss him. He had that silly little boy in him that used to come out when we were stuck in rehearsals. When we were afraid or worried, he'd skip around the place and just do things to make us laugh, you know."
Keith added: "He loved the camaraderie of having his brothers around him. We have to be grateful for what we had and what we shared. And treasure all those memories."
Bandmates reflect on loss
Keith later described the late singer as "softly natured," before adding: "I think he deflected our upset with each other. God love Stephen, he lost his life way too early and left the four of us."
Ronan added: "He loved what he did and there was a simplicity to it for him. All he wanted to do was perform and entertain and sing. So when you were around that environment with Steo, it was impossible to ignore it. So everybody else fed off that."
Shane reflected on the group's lives after Stephen's death, saying: "We all lost our way a little bit, really. It showed the glue that Stephen was," before adding: "I have my memories of Stephen. Adorable memories of him. He's alive when we're together."
