BBC Breakfast viewers expressed frustration during Wednesday's show after host Sarah Campbell interviewed satirical candidate Count Binface live on air. The segment, part of the programme's coverage of Nigel Farage's resignation as MP for Clacton, saw Binface deliver humorous responses to serious questions.
Count Binface's Surreal Manifesto
When asked what he could offer the people of Clacton and whether he had ever visited, Count Binface—comedian Jon Harvey—replied: "No, because I understand from the current incumbent that is part of how you do the job, so I deliberately stayed away." He added that he needed 10 nominations from local inhabitants to stand and would tailor his manifesto to the area, but his national policies include "building at least one affordable house, nationalising Adele, bring back Ceefax, and moving the hand dryer in the gents toilets in The Crown and Treaty pub in Uxbridge."
Viewer Backlash on Social Media
Following the interview, viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to complain. One wrote: "WTF is this???" Another said: "The world has gone crazy." A third commented: "I can't believe she's asking him serious questions." Others called the interview "an utter embarrassment" and a "disgrace," with one viewer stating: "@BBCBreakfast You're a disgrace @BBCNews an interview with a bin!"
Context of the Clacton By-Election
The by-election was triggered by Nigel Farage's resignation as MP for Clacton. Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats, and the Greens have all agreed not to field candidates, leaving Count Binface as the only confirmed challenger so far. Binface previously received 95 votes in the Makerfield by-election, prompting him to quip about Sarah's "gracefully scornful tone."
Host Jon Kay remarked after the interview: "You weren't expecting that were you this morning?" Sarah replied: "I really wasn't expecting that!" BBC Breakfast airs daily on BBC One at 6am.
