BBC Breakfast Reporter's Awkward Invictus Games Shooting Fail
BBC Breakfast Reporter's Embarrassing Invictus Games Moment

BBC Breakfast viewers were left cringing after reporter John Maguire experienced an awkward live television moment while covering an Invictus Games event at the NEC in Birmingham. The segment was part of the buildup to celebrate one year until the international sporting competition, founded by Prince Harry for wounded, injured, and sick service personnel and veterans.

Attempt at Shooting Range Goes Wrong

Maguire decided to try his hand at one of the activities, stepping up to a shooting range in front of the cameras. However, the demonstration did not go according to plan. As presenters Naga Munchetty and Charlie Stayt watched from the studio, Maguire failed to hit the target with every attempt, prompting an uncomfortable moment before the report continued.

Despite the mishap, Maguire tried to laugh off the challenge as coverage moved on to highlight competitors preparing for the Games. He quipped that the technology must be faulty, attempting to deflect the embarrassment.

Second Chance Leads to Success

Fortunately, Maguire got a chance to redeem himself later in the segment after Charlie Stayt insisted he try again to hit the target. On his second attempt, he successfully hit the target, bringing some relief to the live broadcast.

Invictus Games Funding Concerns

During Thursday's Daily Expresso podcast, host JJ Anisiobi revealed that the Invictus Games could face cancellation due to funding issues. He explained that sponsorship was initially the main funding source, but for the Birmingham games, the majority is now provided by the host country. The UK has underwritten £26 million for next year's Invictus Games, but the money will only be released if Invictus raises enough funds. Currently, the UK government has given approximately £3 million of that underwritten amount, leaving a significant shortfall. Anisiobi noted that Boeing, a major sponsor, has pulled out, adding to the financial challenges.
