Jon Kay and Sarah Campbell, presenters of BBC Breakfast, were left in hysterics on Wednesday morning after an unexpected interruption during a live segment about the UK heatwave. The incident occurred as they spoke with BBC Climate Editor Justin Rowlatt, who was reporting from Devil's Point in Plymouth.
Live Broadcast Disrupted by Swimmer
During the broadcast, Rowlatt was discussing the extreme heatwave and its impact on sea temperatures when Kay spotted a swimmer emerging from the water behind him. "Justin, we're sparing a thought as well for the chap who's just emerged from the water behind you," Kay remarked.
Rowlatt then engaged the swimmer, asking, "How was the swim? Was that a good swim?" The man replied, "Lovely. It's really warm this morning." Rowlatt explained to the swimmer that they were discussing ocean temperatures, just as the man walked directly in front of the camera, prompting laughter from the studio.
Presenters React to Unexpected Moment
Back in the studio, Kay and Campbell were in stitches. Kay joked, "He's going to get home, isn't he, and his family are going to say, 'Did you realise?'" Campbell exclaimed, "That was brilliant! You couldn't make that up!" Kay concluded, "Proving that the water is a little warmer at the moment."
Heatwave Context
The segment was part of coverage on the UK heatwave, with temperatures expected to reach up to 35 degrees Celsius in some areas. Rowlatt noted that the clear sunny weather driving the heatwave has raised sea surface temperatures, set against a backdrop of climate change raising average sea temperatures over decades.
