Bake Off fans gutted as Gary misses quarter-finals

The quarter-final line-up for The Great British Bake Off was confirmed on Tuesday, November 3, after judges Paul Hollywood and Nigella Lawson decided to eliminate Gary, a 67-year-old retired garment technologist from Nottinghamshire.

The seventh week of the competition saw the remaining bakers face three challenges themed as 'party week', presented by Noel Fielding and Alison Hammond. The signature challenge required gluten-free, dairy-free or vegan treats, with bakers asked to create "delicious gluten free laminated pastries, perfect for a children's party".

Signature and Technical Challenges

Mo's toastie parcels earned a handshake from Paul Hollywood, prompting Nigella to remark: "I salute Paul saluting you."

The technical challenge, devised by Nigella, saw bakers given unexpected ingredients to craft an "adorable animal cake". Noel noted the plant-based chocolate cake had to incorporate ganache and butter cream, with bakers drawing from a lucky dip to determine their design.

Tom, who claimed star baker honours the previous week, came out on top once more in the technical round. Nigella remarked: "Oh, it's getting quite boring."

Showstopper and Elimination

The showstopper challenged bakers to produce a "spectacular children's birthday cake" that was either dairy free, gluten free, or plant based, featuring an interactive element, with bakers allowed to select their preferred sponge and flavours.

Gabe was crowned star baker for his bug party cake, but Paul and Nigella ultimately chose to eliminate Gary. Before departing the tent, Gary said: "I'm very proud. It was my time to go. This was probably one of the best experiences I've had in my life."

The quarter-final line-up comprises Connie Lewis, Gabe Capes, Mo Mahirr, Moyin Odeniran and Tom Whittaker.

Viewer Reactions

Channel 4 viewers shared mixed reactions to the outcome. One wrote on social media: "Gutted for Gary going to miss him but i'm glad Connie got through." Another remarked: "Much as I love Connie, Gary's showstopper was much better. Totally unfair." While someone else responded: "So happy for Gabe! I did think it was Gary's time but he was a lovely guy."

Some viewers remained unconvinced by certain challenges. One viewer stated: "Hate to say it but some of the themes for bake off this series have been questionable." Another concurred: "Nahhh two cakes in a non cake week is boring."

The Great British Bake Off continues next Tuesday at 8pm on Channel 4 and streaming online.
