Danish-Norwegian pop group Aqua, best known for their 1997 global hit 'Barbie Girl', have announced they are disbanding as a live act after three decades together. The Eurodance band stated that 'this feels like the right moment to say goodbye' while their memories and love for the music remain intact, without providing specific reasons for the split.
Formation and Rise to Fame
Formed in 1989, Aqua achieved international fame with their breakthrough single 'Barbie Girl' and the album 'Aquarium' in 1997. The song became a cultural phenomenon, topping charts worldwide and selling millions of copies.
Legal Battle with Mattel
The band previously won a Supreme Court case against Barbie maker Mattel, who argued the song tarnished the brand. The court ruled it was protected by parody law, allowing the group to continue performing the hit.
Previous Split and Reunion
Aqua had previously split in 2001, only to reunite in 2007 for tours and release another album in 2011. They celebrated the 20th anniversary of 'Barbie Girl' in 2017, marking two decades of their signature sound.
The announcement brings an end to an era for fans of 90s pop, as the group bows out after a career spanning over 30 years.
