The beloved 2004 film Ella Enchanted, starring Anne Hathaway, is being reimagined as a television series for Disney+. Hathaway will serve as an executive producer on the project, which is currently in early development at Miramax Television and Paramount Television Studios.
A Fresh Take on a Classic Tale
According to Deadline, the series is written by Ilana Wolpert (Anyone But You) and will be showrun by Beth Schwartz (Dead Boy Detectives). In a departure from the original film, the show will follow 16-year-old Ella of Frell, who is cursed with obedience. After her mother's unexpected death, she is sent to boarding school, where she uncovers the truth about her curse, builds an unlikely found family, and develops a crush on the prince.
Inspired by the Novel and Modern Hits
Both the film and the series are loosely based on Gail Carson Levine's novel. The boarding school setting, drawn from four chapters of the book, takes inspiration from Netflix's Wednesday. The series will be produced by iGen Studios, known for My Life with the Walter Boys.
Enduring Popularity
More than two decades later, the original film remains a fan favorite. One Rotten Tomatoes reviewer called it the "best childhood movie ever!" while an IMDb user described it as "heartwarming" and "a feel-good movie." The film's supporting cast included Hugh Dancy, Cary Elwes, Minnie Driver, Joanna Lumley, and Lucy Punch.
Ella Enchanted (2004) is currently available to stream on Prime Video.
