Trump Touts DC Fountains Amid Voter Disapproval Over Cost of Living Crisis
Trump Touts DC Fountains Amid Cost of Living Crisis

President Donald Trump has expressed hope that Americans will take note of his efforts to restore more than 20 water fountains in Washington, D.C., even as a new poll reveals widespread voter dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living. In a lengthy post on Truth Social Wednesday evening, Trump wrote, "I hope the Public is watching as the Department of the Interior, Doug Burgum, and myself, are opening up many of the decades old, closed Fountains throughout the D.C. area." The president asserted that D.C. is being "reawakened as to its Beauty, Elegance, and Charm" through his passion projects, including what he termed the "Granddaddy" Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool.

Economic Concerns Dominate

Trump's grand renovations for the White House and the broader D.C. area come at a time when everyday Americans are grappling with elevated costs for gas, groceries, and other living expenses. In April, the annual inflation rate climbed to 3.8 percent, the highest level since 2023. According to a new Fox News poll, a majority of Americans—58 percent—identified the cost of living as their top economic concern, while only 16 percent cited government spending as the most pressing issue. When asked about the state of the economy, 77 percent rated it as only fair or poor, with just 21 percent describing conditions as good and a mere 2 percent as excellent.

The Fox News poll, conducted from May 15 to 18 among 1,002 registered voters, found that 86 percent consider rising prices a problem, including 51 percent who label them a "major" problem. Concern for the broader economy is nearly universal, with 96 percent viewing gas prices as a problem and 75 percent calling it "major." Voters overwhelmingly attribute these challenges to Trump's Iran war, with 91 percent saying it is responsible. Since the conflict began in February, gas prices have more than doubled, reaching an average of $4.55, according to AAA.

Trump's Claims and Criticism

Despite these figures, Trump claimed at the White House Congressional Picnic Tuesday night that "America is thriving," pointing to record-breaking stock market levels and historically low unemployment benefit filings. However, California Governor Gavin Newsom, a political rival, countered on X that night: "Donald Trump isn't serving the American people — he's serving himself. And he thinks you're dumb enough to fall for it."

In his Wednesday Truth Social post, Trump highlighted what he called a "major contribution" to Lafayette Park, located in front of the White House. "The Fountains are now working, and look magnificent as the Park is being entirely rebuilt, using far better and more beautiful materials than originally used," he wrote. Government officials agreed to pay a contractor $11.9 million to repair two fountains in Lafayette Park, as reported by The New York Times last month, citing federal documents. The contract value later rose to $17.4 million after additional tasks were added. In 2022, the Biden administration had estimated the repairs would cost only $3.3 million, according to The New York Times. The Independent has reached out to the White House for comment.

Ambitious Renovations

The fountain openings are part of Trump's broader efforts to beautify Washington, D.C., which include demolishing the East Wing of the White House to build a costly golden ballroom, announcing plans for a 250-foot arch at the end of Arlington Memorial Bridge, and most recently, setting his sights on renovating the Lincoln Memorial reflecting pool. Trump stated on Wednesday that the reflecting pool "never really worked" and was "troublesome for many Administrations." He elaborated, "It leaked from all angles, drew dirt, grime, and decay, was often filled with garbage, and wasn't at all representative of the two Great Monuments it connects — The Lincoln Memorial, and The Washington Monument." He assured that the reflecting pool renovations will be completed before July 4, America's 250th birthday.
