Prime Minister Andy Burnham will appear on Celebrity Gogglebox with his friend Steve Rotheram, making him the first Prime Minister to feature on the hit Channel 4 show. The 56-year-old will be joined by Steve, currently serving as mayor for the Liverpool City Region, and the pair will react to the latest television as part of a Stand Up To Cancer special.
Trailer and Broadcast Details
In a trailer for the episode, which will be broadcast on Friday 22 October at 9:05pm, Burnham is heard discussing beer and snacks and says: "Twiglets are probably the best, aren't they?" A voice over describes the pair as "good friends Andy and Steve".
History of the Show
Gogglebox first aired in 2013, and the civilian version of the programme follows various families and couples or friends from around the country watching the latest television. It made a star out of Scarlett Moffatt, who went on to win I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! and enjoy a huge career as a television presenter.
The celebrity edition of the show has been on air since 2019 and has featured figures such as Absolutely Fabulous icons Jennifer Saunders and Dame Joanna Lumley as well as high-profile music acts like Ed Sheeran, Sir Elton John and Little Mix.
Previous Political Appearances
Burnham may be the first Prime Minister to sign up to appear on the show, but he is not the first Labour leader. In 2017, Jeremy Corbyn appeared on a charity special and, also from the world of politics, those such as Alistair Campbell, Tony Blair's former spin-doctor, and Stanley Johnson, the father of ex-Conservative PM Boris Johnson, have taken part.
Joe Lycett and His Aunties
In the charity special, viewers will also see comedian Joe Lycett, just days after his exit from The Celebrity Traitors was aired. He'll be joined by his aunties, Pauline and Margaret, as the trio shared a clip on the sofa as they settled in to begin filming for the Channel 4 show.
Joe commented: "We are thrilled to join the Gogglebox special supporting Stand Up To Cancer. What are we doing?" His aunties told people they were "watching a lot of TV and eating chocolate" before Joe shared they couldn't wait to see them all on Friday.
Sharing the announcement on Instagram, it wasn't long before people commented on the post, thrilled by the news that Joe and his aunties were going to be part of the Gogglebox special. One person said: "Exquisite choice." Another person commented: "Brilliant, can't wait." Someone else shared: "These should be good!" While a fourth wrote: "They are great fun, your aunties."
